Competency in public health describes the essential knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for the practice of public health for effective delivery of its services and functions. These are within the context of the Core Values of public health as identified by the West African Regional Charter for Public Health 2020. Core Competencies are therefore the basic building blocks of public health education and professional development programmes as they strengthen the right attitude for public health standards, evidence generation and use, collaboration and institutional coordination, ethical and standardised public health service. This extends to public health workforce engagement, capacitation and retention, support, general development and retention. Public Health Skills are the expertise or talent required in order to perform well in your public health job and in specific tasks related to work and general career functions. These public health skills are therefore job skills that enable practitioners to do a particular job well. Sometimes the difference with day to day life skills which help you through everyday tasks may overlap. Irrespective of the work and position, any person in a public role is expected by employers to have some core competencies from both prospective and current employees. The Institute recognises 10 of such public health skills which it considers the core requirements for a public health career. .

APH is a professional body sharpened to help redress the limited human resource capacity in West Africa in the area of Public Health. It is Domiciled in Nigeria, With Members across the 15 States of ECOWAS, it cuts across all of West Africa and beyond, through partnerships and value-add alliances.
